Brendan Shanahan, the three-time Stanley Cup winner who retired last month to end a 21-year National Hockey League playing career, launched a new career as a league executive on Thursday.
Shanahan was hired by the league and will have the title of vice president of hockey and business development.
Commissioner Gary Bettman said Thursday the league will benefit "tremendously" from Shanahan's experience playing the game.
Shanahan retired on November 17 as the NHL's 11th-leading goal scorer with 656. He played on the Detroit Red Wings' Stanley Cup championship teams in 1997, 1998 and 2002. He also played for the Devils, Blues, Whalers and Rangers.
An eight-time All-Star, Shanahan also won a gold medal with Canada at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
