Penguins center Jordan Staal had surgery on his right foot, but coach Dan Bylsma is hopeful he'll be able to return before the end of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.
Staal, one of the finalists for the Selke Trophy for the league's top defensive forward, was cut by the skate of Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban in a collision in Penguins' 6-3 victory in game one of their Eastern Conference second-round series on Friday.
After the game, Staal had surgery to repair a lacerated tendon in his foot.
Early reports indicated Staal could miss the rest of the postseason, but Bylsma termed his status as "day to day" and said he's "not out for the remainder of the playoffs."
Staal, 21, has never missed a game due to injury in his career, a streak that is now expected to end with game two on Sunday.
