Michael Peca, a 35-year-old forward who spent 13 seasons in the National Hockey League and helped Canada to 2002 Olympic gold, announced his retirement on Tuesday.
No team had signed him for the current campaign after he played last season for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Peca scored 176 goals in 864 NHL games with Vancouver, Toronto, Columbus and the New York Islanders.
Peca played for two Stanley Cup playoff runner-up squads, Buffalo in 1999 and Edmonton in 2006. He also twice won the Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward.
