Swedish star Johan Franzen will be out four months with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, the Detroit Red Wings announced.
The 29-year-old Franzen suffered the injury to his left knee Thursday in the Red Wings' 3-2 win over Chicago.
It was the first win of the new season for the Red Wings.
Franzen was chosen 97th overall in the 2004 NHL entry draft by Detroit.
Franzen, who goes by the nickname "The Mule", won a Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2008 and a gold medal with Sweden at the 2006 World Championships.
He had 34 goals in 71 games last season and is hoping to play for Sweden in the Vancouver Olympics next February.
