Hurricanes' Brind'Amour retires after 21 seasons

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Reuters) - Carolina Hurricanes center Rod Brind'Amour retired from the National Hockey League on Wednesday after 21 seasons.

Brind'Amour, who captained the Hurricanes to their first and only Stanley Cup win in 2006 and played for Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics, will remain with the organization in an unspecified role.

After his worst offensive season where he spent time on the team's fourth line, Brind'Amour said his decision was made easier following a meeting with Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford.

"The question then would be how much do I want to play and obviously it might have to be somewhere else and when I started weighing that out it never felt right," Brind'Amour, 39, told a news conference.

"So when I knew for sure the direction the team was going and I wasn't going to be a part of it as a player ... I said 'I'm done. It's over.' I don't want to play any more and certainly don't want to play anywhere else."

Brind'Amour had 452 goals and 732 assists in 1,484 points regular-season games with St. Louis, Philadelphia and Carolina.
