Brendan Shanahan, who won three Stanley Cup rings with the Detroit Red Wings, retired Tuesday after 21 brilliant seasons in the National Hockey League.
Shanahan was on eight-time all-star teams and captured three Stanley Cup titles with Detroit in 1997, 1998 and 2002.
"I would like to thank my family and all of the friends who have helped me achieve and maintain my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League," Shanahan said Tuesday.
In 34 games last season with the New Jersey Devils, Shanahan had six goals and eight assists.
The 40-year-old Canadian played for the New York Rangers, Detroit, Hartford, St. Louis and the Devils in his career.
Shanahan finished his career with 656 goals and 698 assists in 1,524 games.
He is 11th all-time in goals scored and 23rd in points scored. He also ranks 35th all-time in playoff scoring with 134 points in 184 games.
