Chris Chelios, a three-time captain of the US Olympic team, was activated by the Atlanta Thrashers on Wednesday, giving him another National Hockey League stint at age 48.
The 11-time NHL All-Star defenseman has spent 25 NHL seasons with Chicago, Detroit and Montreal, appearing in an NHL-record 266 playoff games.
Chelios, a three-time winner of the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman, last played in the NHL for Detroit in last year's playoffs.
Chelios had played for the minor-league Chicago Wolves this season before being signed by the Thrashers and promoted to the NHL club's roster.
With 28 triumphs for 66 points in 65 games, the Thrashers rank 10th in the Eastern Conference, four points behind Boston for the final playoff berth in the East with 17 games remaining.
